Remember back in 1996, when Republicans flirted with the idea of nominating Colin Powell to be the vice presidential nominee?
Laura Ingraham wrote then that Powell is liberal on issue after issue -- affirmative action, the second amendment, school prayer, abortion and the Contract With America. The man led a distinguished military career, but the notion that he embraces conservative tenets was as flat out wrong in 1996 as it is today.
His endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, therefore was entirely predictable, and inconsequential.

Laura Ingraham & Michele Bachmann

Bachmann (pictured below) is in her first term of Congress. She was one of the first members of the House to push for drilling America's oil and gas reserves, including off-shore. She will address the convention tonight.
It's easy to see why Ingraham and Bachmann have struck up a friendship. Both are smart, pretty and conservative -- particularly on the sanctity of life. (Indeed, Bachmann's constituents describe her as "Minnesota's Sarah Palin.") As Bachmann noted, there is only one woman in the U.S. Senate who is pro-life (Sen. Elizabeth Dole), and only 14 women members of the House who are pro-life. If Anne Northup regains her seat, we can increase that number to 15.
Update: Rep. Bachmann has just finished speaking on the evening's theme of service. She knows something about service; she opened her home to 23 (!) foster children. That's another similarity with Ingraham, who recently adopted a three year old from Central America.
